NEMA's Caskey Appointed to DOE Appliance Standards Advisory Committee

John Caskey, a vice president with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), was named by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu on January 16 to the new Department of Energy (DOE) Appliance Standards and Rulemaking Federal Advisory Committee (ASRAC).

Caskey is NEMA's assistant vice president of Industry Operations and director of the Power Equipment Division.

ASRAC represents energy efficiency/environmental advocacy groups, developers of appliance and commercial equipment standards, manufacturers and trade associations, utilities, and consumers. It provides advice and recommendations related to:
* development of minimum efficiency standards for residential appliances and commercial equipment
* development of product test procedures
* certification and enforcement of standards
* labeling for various residential products and commercial equipment
* other specific issues of concern to DOE, as requested

Caskey developed and managed the first phase of NEMA's Smart Grid program and currently serves as vice chair of SGIP 2.0 Board of Directors and chair of SGIP 2.0 Technical Committee. He has supported various Smart Grid activities at DOE, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the Edison Electric Institute, the Electric Power Research Institute, the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Power and Energy Society. He also served as chairman of the Smart Grid Task Force for IEEE Surge Protective Devices Committee. He holds a BS in physics and a master's in energy technology and engineering.

NEMA is the association of electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers, founded in 1926 and headquartered in Arlington, VA. Its member companies manufacture a diverse set of products including power transmission and distribution equipment, lighting systems, factory automation and control systems, and medical diagnostic imaging systems. Worldwide annual sales of NEMA-scope products exceed $120 billion.
