China's stimulus program to boost appliance sales in rural regions helped increase 2012 unit sales by 22.6%, to 79,913 million units, according to data released by China's Ministry of Commerce. The stimulus program has been in-place since February 2009.

Chinese sales of home appliances in rural areas (excluding sales in provinces of Shandong, Henan, Sichuan, and Qingdao City) in 2012 were 79.913 units, up 22.6% from 2011.

Sales in currency were RMB 214.52 billion (approx. US$34.5 billion) up 18.8% from 2011.

December 2012 sales of home appliances to rural areas were 4.986 million units, up 28.3% from December 2011. December sales were RMB 13.28 billion (approx. US$2.1 billion), also up 28.3% from December 2011.

A total of 298 million home appliances had been sold in rural areas under the stimulus program by the end of 2012, the ministry said, for sales of RMB 720.4 billion (approx. $116 billion). China launched the stimulus program in February 2009 to increase home appliance sales in rural areas.

The top three regions in sales value in 2012 were Anhui, Hebei, and Jiangsu. The three regions account for 33% of the total sales in China.

Sales of color TVs, refrigerators, air-conditioners, and water heaters all exceeded RMB 30 billion under the program, and together accounted for 83.3% of the total program sales.

By company, the three biggest appliance company sales under the stimulus program were:
* Haier, with sales of RMB 25.05 billion
* Gree, with sales of RMB 18.98 billion
* Hisense, with sales of RMB 17.21 billion

The ministry said program sales accounted for 28.5% of the national sales.
