CEA: CE Revenues to Reach Record-High $209 Billion in 2013 Jan 9, 2013

Revenues in the consumer electronics (CE) industry are projected to increase almost 3% to reach a new high of $209.6 billion, according to the semi-annual industry forecast from the Consumer Electronics Association.

The report said 2012 industry revenues were $204 billion, up 5% from 2011. CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro announced the forecast on January 8 in his opening remarks at the 2013 International CES in Las Vegas.

Tablet computer unit sales are expected to reach 116 million in 2013, up 45% from 2012's 80 million units. Industry revenues for tablets are expected to be more than $37 billion, from $31 billion in 2012.

Smartphones are still the biggest revenue source for the industry, and growth is expected to continue in 2013. Smartphones are expected to sell 130 million units in 2013, up from 111 million in 2012. Smartphone shipment revenues are expected to be more than $37 billion in 2013, from $33 billion in 2012.

Laptop/notebook computer sales are forecast to keep growing, with 26 million units projected to be sold in 2013, which will account for $17 billion in revenue.

Although total unit sales of displays were down in 2012, unit sales and revenues of LCD displays are expected to be up in 2013. A record number of LCD TVs - 30.4 million - are expected to ship to dealers in 2013, for more than $15 billion in revenue.
