Semiconductor Sales Top $25 Billion for First Time in 2012 Dec 17, 2012

The Americas region experienced its largest sequential monthly upsurge in semiconductor sales in a decade - 8.1% - in October 2012, according to data from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA)

SIA data released in early December showed worldwide sales of semiconductors were $25.22 billion in October 2012, up 1.7% from $24.79 billion in September. October marked the first month in 2012 when monthly semiconductor sales exceeded $25 billion. Sales were higher than the seasonal growth rate in October, SIA reported.

While global year-to-date sales were down from 2011 - by 3.7% in the first 10 months of 2012 - the deficit was the smallest so far in 2012. All SIA's monthly sales numbers represent a three-month moving average.

"Sales for 2012 continue to lag behind 2011 totals, but the gap has closed in recent months thanks largely to growth in the Americas," said Brian Toohey, SIA president and CEO. "Sales for October were significantly above seasonal trends, and we expect to carry this momentum into 2013 and 2014, with moderate growth projected for both years."
