Sandy's eye made landfall in New Jersey but the storm - factoring in the Arctic jet stream that turned the hurricane into a hybrid superstorm - was almost 900 miles wide. Wind and rough waves were seen as far inland as Chicago's Lake Michigan lakefront.
The scope of damage is only now being evaluated. Six in New York City subway tunnels flooded for the first time in more than a century. While some news reports on Monday said the New York Stock Exchange was flooded with three feet of water, this was apparently not the case. A statement form NYSE this morning said there was no damage that would prevent trading floor operations. The NYSE planned to remain closed on Tuesday but resume trading Wednesday.
An estimated 7.8 million customers were without power in the Northeastern U.S. this morning, and the extensive flooding could delay repairs for as long as a week - which would, in turn, affect nationwide elections on November 6.
