Global TV Shipments Down in First Half of 2012 Sep 11, 2012

Global shipments of TVs were down for the second consecutive quarter, falling 8% in the second quarter of 2012 compared to the second quarter of 2011, according to NPD DisplaySearch. The market research firm said TV shipments started decreasing in 4Q 2011 and the decline has continued. The decline reflects worsening economic conditions worldwide and slower price erosion, both affecting consumer demand.

Japan showed the biggest drops. 2Q 2012 shipments were down 77% from 2Q 2011 to less than 1.4 million.

In developed markets, shipments of TVs decreased 23% year over year. In emerging markets growth slowed to 3%, compared to double-digit growth in late-2011. China, seen as a driver of emerging market growth, showed a drop in 1Q 2012 but grew 6% in 2Q 2012. Eastern Europe showed double-digit demand growth, but the report said shipments were down in all other emerging markets.
