Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index Down in August Aug 30, 2012

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, after a rise in July, was down in August to 60.6 (1985=100).

The index was down from 65.4 in July.

The Expectations Index, one of the components of the Consumer Confidence Index, was down to 70.5 from 78.4. Another component, the Present Situation Index, was almost flat at 45.8 in August from 45.9 in July.

"Consumers were more apprehensive about business and employment prospects, but more optimistic about their financial prospects despite rising inflation expectations," said Lynn Franco, Director of Economic Indicators at The Conference Board. "Consumers' assessment of current conditions was virtually unchanged, suggesting no significant pickup or deterioration in the pace of growth."
