The Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) relayed the news that Gurdon R. (Monk) Munger, former president of ARI, passed away recently.

ARI, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, merged with the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association (GAMA) in 2007 to form AHRI.

Monk Munger was the third president of ARI, serving from 1974-1981. He came to ARI after serving as General Manager of the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI).

Munger was active in both ARI and HVAC engineering association ASHRAE (and ASHRAE's predecessor, ASRE). He was technical secretary of ASRE from 1952 to 1955, working closely with the General Technical Committee and with the editorial board of the Refrigerating Data Books.

As a student at California Polytechnic Institute, he served as president of the Air Conditioning Club and was instrumental in obtaining accreditation of the institution from ASRE. He was elevated to the grade of Fellow in 1979 and received a Distinguished Service Award in 1970.

Munger was with ARI at a time when the association was first feeling the impact of significant government regulation. The energy crisis of the 1970s resulted in the first minimum efficiency standards for equipment from the U.S. Department of Energy as well as from several U.S. States. This period also saw the first EPA efforts to regulate CFC refrigerants (CFCs were eventually phased out for refrigeration and nearly all other applications in the United States in the mid-1990s). At this time, the EPA was also proposing sound labeling requirements for appliances.

Munger was at the helm of ARI when it formed the Government Affairs Committee to address these and other issues of the time. He also led ARI through an increase in standards development and certification program expansion, as well as outreach through new public relations initiatives and promotion/communications efforts.
