Total touch screen module revenue will reach $16 billion in 2012, and will reach $31.9 billion by 2018, according to new NPD DisplaySearch data. Market growth is driven by growing demand from end-products like iPads and other tablet PCs, smart phones, and emerging notebook PC designs. The report said capacitive touch is still the leading touch technology but demand for other technologies is on the rise.

Touch screen penetration has rapidly increased in mobile phones, handheld games, and game consoles, as well as in tablets, and these applications will together make up more than $13.6 billion in touch screen revenues in 2012, the research firm reported. The firm forecasts strong touch screen growth in the coming years, with the growth of larger display applications like convertible/hybrid notebook PCs.

The firm said mobile phones are still the single biggest user of touch screens in unit shipment terms. Three-fourths of the units shipped in 2011 were for mobile phones, and the firm forecast that 1.2 billion touch screens will ship for mobile phones in 2012 - up 68% from 2011.

Tablet PCs make up the fast-growing application for touch screens, with shipments tripling in 2010 and reaching 79.6 million in 2011. The firm expects the continuing strong growth to drive more than 130 million touch screen unit shipments for tablets in 2012, and more than 190 million in 2013. Revenues for this segment are projected to grow by more than $3 billion in 2013.

The new ultrabook PC category will begin to adopt touch screens at the end of 2012 touch screen, the firm predicted, and sees touch screen penetration in notebook PCs to from 2% in 2011 to about 8% in 2013.

All-in-one PCs and automobile monitors are also expected to help drive touch screen market growth in the next few years.

"Demand is growing for thinner, light weight, and lower cost touch panels and devices. In addition, we see strong touch screen growth over the next several years in larger display applications such as convertible/hybrid notebook PCs and all-in-one PCs," noted Jennifer Colegrove, PhD, vice president of Emerging Display Technologies at NPD DisplaySearch. "Over the next few years, in-cell, on-cell, and sensor-on-cover touch technologies will surpass the add-on type projected capacitive touch."
