Metals Service Center Shipments Growth Picks Up

Growth in May shipments of aluminum and steel accelerated in both the United States and Canada in May, according to the Metals Service Center Institute.

MSCI, in its report released in mid-June, said May 2012 saw stronger levels of growth than was seen in April.

U.S. metals service centers shipped 3,842.2 thousand tons of steel products in May 2012, up 9.7% from May 2011. Year-to-date, steel shipments were 18,578.0 thousand tons, up 7.5% from the same period in 2011. Steel product inventories were 9,080.3 thousand tons at the end of May 2012, up 9.5% from May 2011 and down 0.7% from April 2012. At the current shipping rate, this inventory is 2.4 months of supply.

U.S. metals service centers shipped 136.1 thousand tons of aluminum products in May 2012, up 6.8% from May 2011. Year-to-date, aluminum shipments were 664.2 thousand tons, up 5.6% from the same period in 2011. Aluminum product inventories were 385.7 thousand tons at the end of May 2012, up 6.3% from May 2011 and up 2.3% from April 2012. At the current shipping rate, this inventory is 2.8 months of supply.

Canadian service centers shipped 573.1 thousand tons of steel products in May 2012, up 8.5% from May 2011. Year-to-date steel shipments were 2,772.1 thousand tons, up 2.5% from the same period in 2011. Steel product inventories were 1,645.3 thousand tons at the end of May 2012, up 7.1% from May 2011 and down 3.0% from April 2012. At the current shipping rate, this inventory is 2.9 months of supply, down 1.2% from May 2011.

Canadian service centers shipped 14.6 thousand tons of aluminum products in May 2012, up 17.2% from May 2011. Year-to-date aluminum shipments were 69.8 thousand tons, up 14.2% from the same period in 2011. Aluminum products inventories were 36.2 thousand tons at the end of May 2012, up 18.4% from May 2011 and up 2.6% from April 2012. At the current shipping rate, this is 2.5 months of supply in inventory, up 1.1% from May 2011.
