The Guyana operation of Chinese appliance and consumer electronics giant Haier started up its first assembly operation last week.

Haier Guyana is based in the capital city if Georgetown. Guyana is a South American nation of about 755,000 people (according to World Bank 2010 estimates) bordered on the east by Suriname, on the west by Venezuela, and on the north by the North Atlantic Ocean.

Haier has been in Guyana since September of 2011 and held an official opening on February 17, 2012. The move into Guyana was specifically targeted at delivering Haier netbook computers to Guyanese families under the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) program.

Guyana Prime Minister Samuel Hinds said the government has made it a goal that no Guyanese should be computer illiterate or without access to computer training. The government intends to provide a Haier netbook computer to each of 90,000 Guyanese families who haven't had the means to buy a computer themselves.

The new Haier assembly line will have the capacity to produce 200,000 laptops and monitors and 150,000 television sets annually. Haier said the assembly line will be staffed with 70 technicians to assemble products. A single building will house the assembly line, parts storage, and finished products warehousing.
