Father's Day 2012 gift shoppers are thinking "practical," and a report from PriceGrabber said Dads can expect traditional Father's Day presents, with appliances, tools, and auto accessories among the top choices.
The 2012 Father's Day Shopping survey shows that 70% of consumers plan to spend the same amount of money on Father's Day gifts as they did on Mother's Day gifts this year.
The report said:
* 57% of shoppers plan to spend less than $100 on gifts
* 21% plan to spend between $100 and $249
* 11% plan to spend more than $250
* 11% said they don't have a budget when shopping for Father's Day gifts in 2012
Asked to select all of the types of Father's Day gifts they plan to purchase:
* 41% - practical gifts
* 23% - hobby related gifts like golf, baseball, or sporting goods equipment
* 21% - entertainment gifts like consumer electronics, music, videos games, or movies
* 21% - clothing and accessories like wallets, ties, shoes, or jackets
* 15% - outdoor items like barbeque tools or outdoor furniture.
* 18% - technology such as a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
Tech gift buyers were asked to select all of the tech-related gift types they expect to buy:
* 48% - tablet
* 23% - smartphone
* 20% - computer
* 13% - camera
* 12% - TV
The report asked shoppers how they plan to make their purchases:
* 56% - buy from online stores via their computers
* 36% - buy in brick-and-mortar stores
* 2% - buy from an online store via a mobile device.
What is enticing Father's Day gift buyers:
* 59% - free shipping
* 48% - price cuts
* 43% - sales
* 36% - coupons
* 18% - said they will not be influenced by retailer tactics
When will they shop, according to the PriceGrabber survey:
* 30% - plan to purchase Father's Day gifts two weeks prior
* 28% - one week prior
* 16% - one month prior
* 14% - three weeks prior
* 12% - expect to buy gifts last minute, within 48 hours of Father's Day
