Sales of camcorders and DVD players were down significantly in unit sales terms in video consumer electronics categories are down in 2012, while sales of Blu-ray disc players were up 29%, according to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). CEA released data for the first 17 weeks of 2012. Week 17 ended April 27, 2012.
According to ApplianceMagazine.com calculations from CEA data:
* U.S. sales to dealers of camcorders were 1,285,605 units in the first 17 weeks of 2012, down 19.1% from 1,589,048 units in the first 17 weeks of 2011.
* Sales of DVD players (a category that includes standalone DVD players, DVD/VCR combination units, DVD recorders) were 3,736,725 in the first 17 weeks of 2012, down 28.0% from 5,186,500 units in the first 17 weeks of 2011.
* Sales of digital TVs (a category that includes LCD, PDP, and other flat panel types) were 7,406,318 units in the first 17 weeks of 2012, down 0.4% from 7,439,454 units in the first 17 weeks of 2011.
* Sales of Blu-ray disc players were 2,807,015 units in the first 17 weeks of 2012, up 29.0% from 2,176,657 in the first 17 weeks of 2011.
* Sales in all four video electronics categories combined were 15,235,663 in the first 17 weeks of 2012, down 7.1% from 16,391,659 units sold in the first 17 weeks of 2011.
