Gorenje, the European appliance maker based in Velenje, Slovenia, last week celebrated the twentieth anniversary of its Gorenje Academy of Management.
The Academy was organized in 1991 as an in-house educational institution. The start-up was closely related to the decision by Gorenje at that time to increase its overseas sales and to compete with the top appliance companies--an ambition that required prepared and trained personnel.
The Academy has now been completed by almost 500 associates, who had contributed over 100 business plans. Many of these ideas have been realized and incorporated in Gorenje business activities. Close to 80% of the business ideas and designs developed by the participants of the Academy during the 2003 to 2011 period have been partly or completely carried out.
Participants in the commemoration ceremony on May 30 were addressed by the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Danilo Tuerk. Dr. Tuerk pointed out that the Gorenje Academy is in institution of national importance because it has become intrinsic to the success of the one of the biggest companies in Slovenia.
The company is preparing to upgrade the education and training of key workforce as a way to better thrive in a fast-changing business environment, to grow, and to accommodate the needs of an expanding international market. The company plans to establish the Corporate University of Gorenje, which would act along with the Academy of Management and would provide educational programs for international and top management.
