Spending - and Smartphone Shopping - Up for Mother's Day Apr 27, 2012

The average person celebrating Mother's Day is expected to spend $152.52 on gifts, up from $140.73 in 2011, according to the a National Retail Federation consumer spending survey conducted by BIGinsight. Total spending is expected to reach $18.6 billion.

Survey results show that:
* 18.1% of consumers plan to buy Mom a gift from the Housewares or Gardening tools category
* 12.7% of consumers plan on giving Mom the gift of Consumer Electronics

While consumers are spending more than in past years on Mother's Day gifts they are still looking for deals, and 39.3% of smartphone owners and 51.2% of tablet owners plan to use their devices to research products/compare prices, redeem coupons, look up retailer information, and purchase gift items.

Specifically for tablet owners, 24.4% will purchase a gift for mom, 35.7% will research products and compare prices, and 19.6% will look up retailer information such as store hours and location.

Tablet owners ages 18-24 and 25-34 will make the most of their device, with 40.4% and 40.9%, respectively, planning to shop and purchase gifts for mom on their tablets.
