Metals Service Center Shipments Momentum Increases

February shipments of aluminum and steel from metals service centers were up sharply from February 2011 in the U.S. and Canada, according to the Metals Service Center Institute.

U.S. metals service centers shipped 3,655.3 thousand tons of steel products in February 2012, up 14.3% from February 2011. Year-to-date steel shipments were 7,378.5 thousand tons, up 11.6% from the first two months of 2011. Steel product inventories the end of February 2012 were 8,924.5 thousand tons, 12.5% more than February 2011 and up 1.8% from January 2012. This is 2.4 months supply in inventory at the current shipping rate, 1.6% less than a year ago.

U.S. metals service centers shipped 130.0 thousand tons of aluminum products in February 2012, up 14.8% from February 2011. Year-to-date aluminum shipments were 263.6 thousand tons, up 12.3% from the first two months of 2011. Inventories at the end of February 2012 of aluminum products were 374.7 thousand tons, up 4.6% over February 2011 and 0.1% more than in January 2012. This is 2.9 months supply in inventory, 8.8% less than a year ago.

Canadian Service Centers shipped 541.5 thousand tons of steel products in February 2012, up 8.2% from February 2011. Year-to-date steel shipments were 1,102.3 thousand tons, up 5.4% from the first two months of 2011. Steel product inventories at the end of February 2012 were 1,728.9 thousand tons, 13.5% more than February 2011 and 3.0% more than January 2012. This is 3.2 months supply, 4.9% more than in February 2011.

Canadian Service Centers shipped 13.5 thousand tons of aluminum products in February 2012, up 24.2% from February 2011. Year-to-date, aluminum shipments were 27.5 thousand tons, up 20.1% from the first two months of 2011. Inventories at the end of February 2012 were 34.8 thousand tons, 14.5% more than February 2011 and up 1.9% from January 2012. This is 2.6 months supply, a decrease of 7.8% from a year ago.
