After a rise of more than 20 points in January, and after reaching its highest level in more than six years in February, NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions retreated slightly in March 2012, slipping 0.5 points to 72.

More than half of survey panelists reported conditions were better in March than February:
* 52% reported conditions were better in March than February
* 40% said conditions were unchanged
* 8% reported conditions were worse

The association said the survey's measure of the degree of change in current North American conditions remained at its highest mark in almost 2 years in March at +0.7 in February. Panelists report intensity of change on a scale ranging from -5 (deteriorated significantly) through 0 (unchanged) to +5 (improved significantly).

The EBCI for future North American conditions remained strongly positive, up 11 points to 86 in March 2012 - its highest reading in more than a year.

An overwhelming majority of respondents said they expect conditions to improve to at least some degree in the next 6 months:
* 72% said they expect conditions to improve in the next 6 months (up from 55% in the previous month's report)
* None of the panelists expect the business environment will worsen (one panelist did in the previous month's report)
