First-Ever iF Gold Award for an Appliance Goes To Whirlpool Mar 15, 2012

iF International Forum Design has given its first-ever iF Gold Award to a home appliance: Whirlpool Corp. earned an iF Gold Design Award in the product design category for its iXelium cooktop, presented at the iF Product Design Ceremony Munich.

The cooktop was designed by Whirlpool EMEA's Global Consumer Design Europe in Biandronno, Italy. The cooktop was selected for its pairing of technology and design, with high-efficiency burners fully integrated into the streamlined surface. It is the only cooktop marketed with grids and burners with the proprietary iXelium coating, engineered to maintain a shine over time. The nanotechnology coating is applied to all steel parts to prevent the yellowing and scratching of stainless steel.

"Winning the first iF Gold Design Award for home appliances is an outstanding achievement and demonstrates Whirlpool Corporation's commitment to innovative solutions that simplify the lives of our consumers," said Patrick Schiavone, Vice President, Global Consumer Design, Whirlpool Corporation.

The five-burner cooktop is engineered to cut up to 20% from boil time and to save up to 15% on gas consumption. Whirlpool guarantees a reduction of more than 50% of CO2 emissions compared to traditional cooktops.

The iF Gold Design Award recognizes international excellence in the field of design and technology. Products are evaluated by an iF panel of judges composed of designers from around the world. Winners are selected in four categories: product design, communication design, materials, and packaging design.

The iF Awards are organized by the iF International Forum Design, which is an arm of iF Industrie Forum Design. The forum was launched in 1953 in Hannover, Germany.
