The NPE2012 international plastics exposition, taking place April 1-5, 2012 in Orlando, is expected to by significantly larger than the previous NPE in 2009.
SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association, which produces the triennial trade show, broke out NPE2012 by the numbers (as of the end of February 2012):
* 1,830 exhibiting companies
* 903,000 sq ft (83,890 sq m) of exhibit space
More exhibitors are expected to be added before the show opens. The show is already one-fifth larger than the 2009 NPE event, when the recession forced dropouts and space cutbacks by exhibitors.
Registrations for NPE2012 were 10% ahead of NPE2009 and 8% ahead of NPE2006 at the same number of weeks before the show. Total registration for the 2012 event will exceed 50,000, according to Gene Sanders, SPI's senior vice president of trade shows and conferences, and could exceed 60,000. Registration of 50,000 will put the 2012 event up by 16% over 2009.
Hotel reservations are also up significantly. "At NPE2009, we utilized 32,000 total room nights, but we are currently closing in on 50,000 room nights - a 56% increase - with five more weeks to go," Sanders said. "This means not just more visitors but longer stays."
International participation will be greater than previous NPEs, with 26% of registrations thus far coming from individuals from outside the United States. The final figure for NPE2006 was 16% and for NPE2009 18%. The increase includes a substantial showing by visitors from Latin America, accounting for half of international registrations thus far.
Exhibit sizes are increasing in 2012. Sanders noted that the 35 largest exhibitors this year average 20% more equipment than at NPE2009, as measured by the weight per square foot of exhibit space. "Our equipment total for the entire show will exceed the weight of two hundred Boeing 747 jetliners," Sander said.
NPE2012 will take place Sunday through Thursday, April 1-5, 2012, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. Information is at:
