Metals Service Center Shipments Show Growth in January Feb 28, 2012

January 2012 metals service center shipments continued to grow on a year over year basis in both the U.S. and Canada, according to the Metals Service Center Institute.

U.S. metals service centers shipped 3,723.2 thousand tons of steel products in January 2012, up 9.0% from January 2011. Steel product inventories were 8,769.8 thousand tons at the end of January 2012, up 9.2% over January 2011. At the current shipping rate this is 2.4 months supply in inventory.

U.S. metals service centers shipped 133.6 thousand tons of aluminum products in January 2012, up 10.1% from January 2011.

Aluminum product inventories were 374.3 thousand tons at the end of January 2012, up 6.1% over January 2011. This is 2.8 months supply in inventory.

Canadian metals service centers shipped 560.8 thousand tons of steel products in January 2012, up 2.9% from January 2011. Steel product inventories were 1,678.5 thousand tons at the end of January 2012, up 13.6% from a year ago. This is 3.0 months supply in inventory.

Canadian metals service centers shipped 14.0 thousand tons of aluminum products in January 2012, up 16.3% from January 2011. Inventories of aluminum products were 34.1 thousand tons at the end of January 2012, up 8.2% from January 2011. This represents 2.4 months supply in inventory.
