The Samsung Electronics board yesterday approved the spin-off of its LCD business. Samsung expects OLED panels to replace LCD panels as the dominant mainstream display technology and said it needed to restructure LCD in order to stay competitive. The LCD business will become a new corporation, which will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics). Going forward, the new corporation will consider restructuring measures, which may include merging with Samsung Mobile Display and S-LCD Corporation.

The move is expected to be approved by shareholders on March 16 and the spin-off is expected to be effective on April 1, 2012.
