2011 U.S. Steel Shipments Up 10.1% Feb 21, 2012

U.S. steel mills shipped 8,085,761 net tons in December 2011, a 9.2% increase from the 7,404,828 net tons shipped in November 2011, and a 13.7% increase from the 7,111,031 net tons shipped in December 2010, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute. Shipments for full-year 2011 were 91,865,449 net tons, a 10.1% increase over 2010 full year shipments of 83,443,836.

A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes:
* hot rolled sheet up 15%
* hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip up 2%
* cold rolled sheet up 2%

AISI estimates that about 4% of total steel shipments were used to make appliances in 2010. Other markets were:
* Construction
* Automotive
* Machinery and Equipment
* Container
* Energy
* National Defense and Homeland Security
* Other
