Liston P. Durden, Viking Range's longtime Senior Vice President of Marketing, was one of the best-known figures in the North American major appliance industry when he died suddenly of a heart attack last year. Viking Range has now named one of the buildings in its hometown of Greenwood, MS, after Durden. The Durden Building, at the corner of Main and Front Streets in Greenwood, is home to the Liston P. Durden Training Center.

Durden, pictured, died on Jan. 22, 2011. The building was dedicated in his memory on Jan. 22, 2012.

The Durden Building serves as the hub of Viking dealer and distributor training and functions as a demonstration classroom for the Greenwood, Mississippi Viking Cooking School. Viking recently added 5,600 sq. ft. of training space to the facility to better showcase its four principal lines – Commercial, Professional, Designer, and Outdoor. Viking associates from more than 47 countries have trained at the facility.

“Training was near and dear to Liston’s heart and was a big part of his career in the major appliance industry,” said Viking President and CEO Fred Carl. “Nothing could be more appropriate than to honor one of the appliance industry’s most respected leaders in such a way.”

Durden worked for appliance OEMs GE, KitchenAid, and Whirlpool before joining Viking in 1989 as its first Vice President of Marketing. Viking had been founded by Carl in 1984 and Viking appliances had only been in production since 1987. Durden is widely credited with helping grow Viking into one of the best-known premium appliance brands.

Durden was also well known in the industry for his involvement with the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), serving as its Chairman of the Board from 2004-2006. In 2007 he was awarded the Home Appliance Industry Leadership (HAIL) Award, considered the major appliance industry’s top honor.
