Briggs & Stratton will move manufacturing from its Newbern, TN, U.S. facility to its McDonough, GA, U.S. facility, and will close a its plant in Ostrava in the Czech Republic. The outdoor power equipment maker will move Ostrava production to its plant in Murray, KY, U.S. The company will also reconfigure and idle some manufacturing operations in Poplar Bluff, MO, U.S.
Todd J. Teske, chairman, president, and CEO, said the company needs to reduce manufacturing capacity. "Since 2004, the U.S. lawn and garden market has declined over 33%. This significant and prolonged market decline is unlike any other this industry has seen in decades."
He added, "In addition, we have taken actions over the past year to reconfigure and reduce our capacity and costs at our Poplar Bluff, Mo engine plant. "
Newbern currently manufacturers walk-behind lawn mowers and snow throwers for the U.S. domestic market. Its closing - expected by May 15, 2012 - will affect 240 regular employees and 450 temporary employees.
The Ostrava plant currently makes small engines for the outdoor power equipment industry. Its closing - expected by March 15, 2012 - will affect 77 regular employees.
The company does not anticipate significant employment changes at its Poplar Bluff, Missouri facility.
