December metals service center shipments grew more slowly in December 2011 than they have for most of the year.
U.S. service centers shipped 2,957.7 thousand tons of steel products in December 2011, up 5.0% from December 2010. Full-year 2011 steel shipments were 40,711.4 thousand tons, up 14.2% over 2010.
Steel product inventories at the end of December 2011 were 8,348.4 thousand tons, 8.3% more than December 2010 and 3.1% than November 2011. At the current shipping rate, this is a 2.8-month supply, of 3.1% more than a year ago.
U.S. service centers shipped 109.3 thousand tons of aluminum products in December 2011, up 5.2% from December 2010. Full-year 2011 aluminum shipments were 1,501.3 thousand tons, up 15.0% from 2010.
Aluminum product inventories were 356.9 thousand tons at the end of December 2011, 2.6% more than December 2010 and 0.7% less than November 2011. This is a 3.3-month supply, 5.9% less than a year ago.
Canadian service centers shipped 419.5 thousand tons of steel products in December 2011, up 10.2% from December 2010. Full-year 2011 steel shipments were 6,289.1 thousand tons, up 11.0% from 2010.
Steel product inventories were 1,507.0 thousand tons, up 8.1% from December 2010 and up 11.9% from November 2010. This is 3.6 months supply, 1.8% less than a year ago.
Canadian service centers shipped 9.7 thousand tons of aluminum products, up 8.0% from December 2010. Full-year 2011 aluminum shipments were 146.5 thousand tons, up 8.3% from 2010.
Aluminum products inventories were 34.2 thousand tons, up 9.3% from December 2010 and down 3.1% from last month. This represents 3.5 months supply in inventory, up 1.2% from a year ago.
