World Crude Steel Output Up 6.8% in 2011

World crude steel production was 1,527 million metric tons (mmt) in 2011, up 6.8% from 2010 and the record for global crude steel production, according to the World Steel Association. All major steel-making countries except Japan and Spain grew in 2011, and growth was especially strong in Turkey, South Korea, and Italy.

Asian crude steel production in 2011 was 988.2 mmt, up 7.9% from 2010. The region’s share of world steel production was up from 64.0% in 2010 to 64.7% in 2011.
• China's production was 695.5 mmt in 2011, up 8.9% from 2010, and its share of world crude steel production was up from 44.7% in 2010 to 45.5% in 2011.
• Japan produced 107.6 mmt in 2011, down 1.8% from 2010.
• South Korea produced 68.5 mmt, up 16.2%.

EU production in 2011 was 177.4 mmt, up 2.8% from 2010.
• Spain's production was 15.6 mmt of crude steel in 2011, down 4.6% from 2010.
• Italy produced 28.7 mmt, up 11.3% from 2010.

In 2011, crude steel production in North America was 118.9 mmt, up 6.8% from 2010.
• The United States produced 86.2 mmt, up 7.1% from 2010.

The CIS produced 112.6 mmt of crude steel, up 4.0% from 2010.
• Russia produced 68.7 mmt of crude steel, up 2.7% increase from 2010.
• Ukraine produced 35.3 mmt, up 5.7% from 2010.

Annual crude steel production for South America was 48.4 mmt in 2011, up 10.2% from 2010.
• Brazil produced 35.2 mmt in 2011, up 6.8% from 2010.
