November Metals Shipment Growth Off Slightly from October Rates

North American metals shipments, as reported by the Metals Service Center Institute, showed slower growth rates in November 2011 than seen for most of the year.

U.S. service centers shipped 3,301.0 thousand tons of steel products in November 2011, up 10.6% from November 2010. For 2011 year-to-date steel shipments were 37,753.7 thousand tons, up 15.0% from the first 11 months of 2010. Steel product inventories were 8,100.5 thousand tons at the end of November 2011, up 11.3% from November 2010 and 3.3% less than October 2011. At the current shipping rate, this is a 2.5 month supply, an increase of 0.7% from a year ago.

U.S. service centers shipped 120.8 thousand tons of aluminum products in November, up 9.5% from November 2010. Year-to-date aluminum shipments were 1,392.0 thousand tons, up 15.5% from the same period in 2010. Inventories of aluminum products were 359.5 thousand tons at the end of November 2011, up 3.4% from November 2010 and up 0.4% from October 2011. This represents 3.0 months of supply, which is 5.6% less than a year ago.

Canadian service centers shipped 534.7 thousand tons of steel products in November 2011, up 4.3% from November 2010. Year-to-date steel shipments were 5,869.6 thousand tons, up 11.0% from 2010. Steel product inventories were 1,346.4 thousand tons, up 3.9% from November 2010 and down 9.4% from October 2011. This is 2.5 months of supply, 0.4% less than November 2010.

Canadian service centers shipped 13.2 thousand tons of aluminum products in November, up 4.7% from November 2010. Year-to-date aluminum shipments were 136.7 thousand tons, up 8.3% from 2010. Inventories of aluminum products were 35.3 thousand tons, up 14.0% from November 2010 and down 2.9% from October 2011. This is 2.7 months of supply, 8.8% more than a year ago.
