Next-Gen Secure Memory Collaboration Includes Panasonic, Samsung, Sandisk, Sony, and Toshiba Dec 28, 2011

Five companies plan to form a Next Generation Secure Memory Initiative and to collaborate on a new content protection technology for flash memory cards, such as SD Cards. The companies will start preparing for licensing and promotion of HD (high-definition)-capable security for SD Cards and embedded memory for use in consumer product applications.

The five companies are:
• Panasonic Corporation
• Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
• SanDisk Corporation
• Sony Corporation
• Toshiba Corporation

The content protection solution will be robust enough to protect HD content. Content security will be realized with the use of unique ID (identification) technology for flash memory, robust copy protection based on public key infrastructure, and other technologies.

The companies believe the technology will enable HD content applications such as:
• HD network download
• broadcast content to go
• HD Digital Copy/Managed Copy from Blu-ray media

The companies expect to see products on the market using the solution in 2012.
