Metalforming companies foresee a spike in business conditions in the next three months, according to the December 2011 Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) Business Conditions Report.
The December report shows that:
• 33% of participants expect economic activity to improve in the next three months (up sharply from 11% who said so in the November report)
• 57% expect activity to remain unchanged (61% in the November report)
• 10% expect activity will decline (28% in November)
Metalforming companies also incoming orders to be up significantly in the next three months:
• 40% expect an increase in orders (21% in November)
• 48% expect no change (49% in November)
• 12% expect fewer orders (30% in November)
Average daily shipping levels remained steady in the most recent reporting period:
• 25% of participants report shipping levels are above levels of three months ago (27% said so in the November report)
• 44% report shipping levels are the same as three months ago (47% in November)
• 31% report decreased shipping levels (26% in November)
Metalforming companies with some of their workforce on short time or layoff declined to 12% in December, down from 17% in November and down from 16% in December 2010.
“Current orders and shipments for PMA member companies have slowed modestly during Q-4,” said William E. Gaskin, PMA president. “However, year-to-date through October, the typical member company is still up 8% in new orders and 12% in shipments. The December Business Conditions Report supports the expectation that member companies believe their customers will ramp up production after the holidays, and that 2012 will be a year with modest continued growth for manufacturers.”
