Projected Capacitive Touch Screens Have Gone Mainstream Dec 22, 2011

Growing popularity of projected capacitive touch among mobile phones has taken the technology into the mainstream, according to NPD DisplaySearch. The market research firm estimates that more than 566 million projected capacitive touch screens will ship for mobile phones in 2011.

The sensor-on-cover solution is an emerging configuration for the technology. The solution is also known as “one glass solution” or “touch on lens,” and it requires on-cover lens finishing and a new ITO patterning processes.

"With the benefit of thinner structure and lighter weight, DisplaySearch expects this approach to grow rapidly in 2012,” said Jennifer Colegrove, PhD, vice president of Emerging Display Technologies for the market research firm.
