Metals Shipments in North America

Double-digit rates in metals service center shipments returned in October in the United States, while shipments in Canada grew slightly more slowly than in September.

U.S. service centers shipped 3,378.1 thousand tons of steel products in October 2011, up 11.5% from October 2010. Year-to-date, 2011 steel shipments were 34,452.7 thousand tons, up 15.4% from the first 10 months of 2010. Steel product inventories at the close of October 2011 were 8,377.7 thousand tons, up 12.9% from October 2010 and down 1.5% from September 2011. This is 2.5 months supply in inventory at current shipping rates, a level that is up 1.3% from October 2010.

U.S. service centers shipped 128.0 thousand tons of aluminum products in October 2011, up 10.3% from October 2010. Year-to-date, 2011 aluminum shipments were 1,271.2 thousand tons, up 16.1% from the first 10 months of 2010. Aluminum products inventories at the end of October 2011 were 358.2 thousand tons, 6.3% more than the inventories at the end of October 2010 and 1.3% more than September 2011. That level is a 2.8 months supply, down 3.6% from October 2010.

Canadian service centers shipped 529.4 thousand tons of steel products in October 2011, up 9.9% from October 2010. Year to date 2011 steel shipments were 5,334.9 thousand tons, up 11.7% from the first 10 months of 2010. Steel product inventories at the end of October 2011 were 1,485.9 thousand tons, 11.4% more than October 2010 but 5.0% less than September 2011. This is 2.8 months supply, 1.4% more than the same month in 2010.

Canadian service centers shipped 12.3 thousand tons of aluminum products in October 2011, up 5.7% October 2010. Year-to-date in 2011, Canadian aluminum shipments were 123.6 thousand tons, up 8.7% from the first 10 months of 2010. Inventories of aluminum products were 36.4 thousand tons, up 13.9% from October 2010 and 4.2% more than September 2011. This is a 2.9 months supply, 7.8% more than at this same point in 2010.
