CECED, the European appliance association, was one of the signatories to a letter sent to the President of the European Council recommending a strong energy savings policy as to Europe's economic recovery.

The letter was sent by the Coalition for Energy Savings, made up of 23 business, professional, and civil society organizations, include appliance association CECED. It went to Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council. The letter said the coalition members share "Serious concern over the direction" in the Council's debate on the draft Energy Efficiency Directive (EED).

"Instead of welcoming the draft EED for providing Europe with an opportunity to kick-start the economic recovery and tap into the numerous benefits of energy savings, many governments are simply criticizing it for being burdensome and costly. If the discussion continues this way, it could have serious repercussions for the Europe 2020 strategy, as well as Europe's energy future," the coalition letter said.

The letter urged the council to "reverse the trend of the debate to ensure Europe gets a strong EED that will deliver on its promises."

The promise in question is the Europe 2020 strategy, which set energy savings goals of 20% to be achieved by 2020. The coalition noted that the European Commission's draft directive is likely to misses that target by one-third. "Missing this target means missing out on hundreds of thousands of new jobs, billions of Euros of cost savings, and the chance to make Europe a global leader in efficiency technologies and practices. This Directive urgently requires strengthening - not further weakening."

The coalition letter said a clear political commitment from Europe's leaders is necessary to achieve the social, financial, and environmental advantages of the energy savings goals.
