Metals Shipments in North America Show YoY Growth

September 2011 service center shipments remained above 2010 levels for steel and aluminum products in both the United States and Canada. Inventory positions remained near August levels for both metals in both countries.

U.S. metals service centers shipped 3,401.8 thousand tons of steel products in September 2011, up 7.4% from September 2010. Year-to-date, steel shipments were 31,074.5 thousand tons, up 15.9% from the same period in 2010.

U.S. metals service center steel inventories were 8,502.1 thousand tons at the end of September 2011, up 12.9% over September 2010 and an increase of 0.5% from August 2011. At the current shipping rate, this represents 2.5 months supply in inventory, an increase of 5.1% from a year ago.

U.S. metals service centers shipped 126.2 thousand tons of aluminum products in September 2011, up 6.6% from September 2010. Year-to-date aluminum shipments were 1,143.2 thousand tons, up 16.8% from 2010

U.S. metals service center aluminum were 353.5 thousand tons at the end of September 2011, up 7.9% from September 2010 and down 2.0% from August 2011. This is 2.8 months supply, up 1.1% from a year ago.

Canadian metals service centers shipped 556.9 thousand tons of steel products in September 2011, up 10.1% from September 2010. Year-to-date steel shipments were 4,805.5 thousand tons, up 12.0% from 2010.

Canadian metals service center steel inventories were 1,563.6 thousand tons at the end of September 2011, up 18.9% from September 2010 and down 3.9% from August 2011. This represents 2.8 months supply, an increase of 7.9% from a year ago.

Canadian metals service centers shipped 13.3 thousand tons of aluminum in September 2011, up 8.8% from September 2010. Year-to-date, aluminum shipments were 111.2 thousand tons, up 9.1% from 2010

Canadian metals service center inventories of aluminum products were 34.9 thousand tons at the end of September 2011, up 11.2% from September 2010 and an increase of 1.9% from August 2011. This represents 2.6 months supply, an increase of 2.2% from a year ago.
