IEA Annex Starts Work on SPF Method for Residential Heat Pumps Oct 6, 2011

The International Energy Agency (IEA) Heat Pump Annex 39 – formed for the purpose of developing a common method for calculating the seasonal performance factor (SPF) of residential heat pumps - held its first meeting Sept 28-29 in Nuremberg, Germany.

The U.S.-based Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) is a member of the U.S. IEA Heat Pump National Team and said it will be closely monitoring the effort. The SPF calculation method is intended to use a generalized and transparent approach, based on measured data.

Products covered by the work of Annex 39 include air-to-air, air-to-water, and geothermal heat pumps intended for heating only, heating and cooling, and water heating. The project is expected to last three years and is funded by ten countries, including the United States through the Department of Energy.
