Stainless steel crude steel production increased in the first half of 2011 by 3.8% compared to the same period of 2010 according to preliminary figures from the Brussels-based International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF).

Worldwide production in the first 6 months of 2011 was 16.4 million metric tons (mmt), a new all-time high. However, the increase in production was restricted to China and the Central and Eastern Europe region, compensating for losses in other major areas.

Excluding China, Asian stainless steel production decreased 3.1% to 4.4 million metric tonnes (mmt). Korea and India showed increased production, but production was down in Japan and Taiwan. China increased stainless production by 13.5% to 6.2 mmt in the first half of 2011.

Western Europe/Africa region stainless steel production was essentially flat in the first half of the year, with total production of 4.3 mmt (down 0.2% from the first half of 2010). Individual nation results ranged from a 20% increase to a 9% decrease.

Stainless crude steel production in the Americas decreased by 1.6% to 1.4 million tons in the first half of the year.

Central and Eastern Europe increase production by 22%, although the volume of stainless steel produced in the region is quite small.
