Nearly a third of Americans spend more time thinking about what to cook than actually cooking, according to the results of a new national survey fielded by Impulse Research for Bosch home appliances. The survey found that 28% of respondents stay out of the kitchen because they don't know how to cook.

"It’s surprising that even with all the technological advancements in appliances and a more mainstream foodie culture, Americans are still staying out of the kitchen,” said Micaela Shaw, brand manager for Bosch home appliances.

The survey showed that more than half of Americans do not cook at home because their spouse/partner does most of the cooking.

Other reasons given for not cooking:
• 25% said they don't cook because they don't want to deal with the clean-up afterward.
• 21% said they did not have enough time.
• 66% said that grocery shopping takes more time than any other household chores – even more than cleaning and washing dishes.

“At Bosch, we want to encourage Americans to get back into the kitchen to create meals that they are proud to put on the dinner table,” said Shaw.

The survey was conducted online in April 2011 with a random sample of 1087 men and women, ages 25+, al of them members of the Impulse Research proprietary online panel. The Impulse Research proprietary online panel was selected to match U.S. population demographics.
