Demand for motors grew for the fourth consecutive quarter during the second quarter of 2011, with industry association NEMA reporting that its Motors Shipments Index was up 16.4% from the previous quarter. The 2Q gain followed a 13.1% gain in 1Q 2011. The fractional horsepower motor segment still far outpaced the integral horsepower segment in the first half of 2011, continuing two-year trend.
Despite these gains, the near-term economic environment appears less favorable, NEMA said, with the U.S. manufacturing sector starting 3Q 2011 on a weak note, pointing to a recent decrease in the Institute of Supply Management’s purchasing managers index and weaker June durable goods orders.
