AHRI to DOE: Don't Regulate Commercial/Industrial Fans

The Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in response to the DOE's proposal to designate commercial and industrial fans, blowers, and fume hoods as federally covered equipment. AHRI urged DOE to not regulate such equipment and instead focus its resources on more pressing issues.

AHRI said a test procedure or energy conservation standard rulemaking for such products is unnecessary and duplicative. AHRI said such regulation would not achieve additional energy savings because systems that include commercial and industrial fans and blowers already fall under the regulation of DOE energy standards.

"The minimum energy efficiency requirements within these standards adequately account for the energy consumption of various components within a system, including commercial and industrial fans and blowers," wrote Aniruddh Roy, AHRI regulatory engineer, in a letter sent to DOE's Ms. Brenda Edwards.

In addition, AHRI said, the DOE plans are based on analysis of outdated data.
