Crude Steel Production Up 8% in June Jul 25, 2011

World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (Worldsteel) was 128 million metric tons (mmt) in June, up 8% higher from June 2010.

World crude steel production in the first six months of 2011 was 757.8 mmt, 7.6% higher than in the first half of 2010. All major steel-producing regions showed increased production for the year so far.

• China’s crude steel production for June 2011 was 59.9 mmt, up 11.9% from June 2010.
• Japan's crude steel production was 8.9 mmt in June 2011, down 5% from June 2010.
• India's production was 6.0 mmt, up 7.3%.
• South Korea’s production was 5.7 mmt, up 19%.
• Germany’s production was 3.9 mmt, up 0.2%.
• Italy's production was 2.6 mmt, up 15.2%.
• Spain’s production was 1.5 mmt, up 4.5%.
• France's production was 1.4 mmt, down 6.1%.
• Turkey's production was 2.8 mmt, up 12.3%.
• The United States' production was 7.2 mmt, up 1.7%.
• Brazil's production was 3.0 mmt, up 3.9%.

The world crude steel capacity utilization ratio of the 64 countries tracked by Worldsteel in June 2011 was 82.8%, or 1.2 percentage points higher than in May 2011. Compared to June 2010, the utilization ratio in June 2011 increased by 2.5 percentage points.
