Electroindustry Business Confidence Slips in June Jul 7, 2011

NEMA’s Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions in June 2011 slipped to 45.5 in June, dropping below the 50-point “growth threshold” for the first time since October 2010.

The index climbed as high as 69.6 in February 2011, prior to a sharp run-up in oil prices and Japan’s earthquake and tsunami.
• 27% of panelists reported conditions improved in June, the same as in May.
• 36% reported conditions deteriorated in June, up from 23% in May.
• 36% said conditions were unchanged in June, down from 50% in May.

The EBCI for future North American conditions continues to suggest an improvement in conditions in the next six months; this index topped the 50-point mark for a 28th consecutive month in June. The index was 63.6 in June, down from 81.8 in May. The report said:
• 36% of panelists in June expect conditions to improve during the next six months (compared to 68% in May)
• 9% expect conditions to deteriorate (5% in May)
