Ductless split systems were the HVAC category showing the largest increase in unit shipments in Canada in the first quarter of 2011, increasing 104% according to the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada.
Residential air-conditioning was the second-biggest gainer, up 15%.
Sectors shipments in the first quarter of 2011:
• commercial air-conditioning shipments increased 8%, from 7,257 in the first quarter of 2010 to 7,812 in the first quarter of 2011
• residential air-conditioning shipments were up 15% from 36,454 in 1Q 2010 to 41,780 in 1Q 2011
• residential furnace shipments decreased 22% from 80,313 in 1Q 2010 to 62,950 in 1Q 2011
• unit heater shipments increased 11% from 5,583 in 1Q 2010 to 6,213 in 1Q 2011
• ductless split system shipments increased 104% from 11,815 in 1Q 2010 to 24,151 in 1Q 2011
• chiller bookings increased 4% from 265 in 1Q 2010 to 276 in 1Q 2011.
HRAI uses the following definitions:
• residential air-conditioning means ducted split system air-conditioning and heat pumps up to 5 tons
• ductless splits means heat pumps and conditioning condensing units (cooling only)
• commercial air-conditioning means rooftops (combination heat/cool), packaged cooling, and packaged heat pumps
• furnace means residential forced air furnaces of all types (gas, oil, electric, and combination);
• chillers include large tonnage liquid, reciprocating liquid, and absorption chillers
• unit heater means self‐contained automatically controlled vented units limited to heating of non‐residential space and also includes duct furnaces
