The market forecasts from IMS Research for inverter-based variable speed drives (VSD) in home appliances over the next five years has been revised upward. The firm expects 2011 and 2012 to both show growth of 25% year-over-year, to reach 155 million major home appliances shipped with VSD in 2015.
VSD in appliances is being driven up by cheaper inverter-based technology and more regulatory pressure on appliance efficiency.
VSD is more efficient because it allows motors to operate at a variety of speeds instead of just on (full-speed) and off. This allows the motor to be programmed to run at the most efficient speed for the application and its specific operational conditions.
Much of the growth in inverter-based control in appliances comes from Asia, and the firm reports that efficiency regulations in China, especially for room air-conditioners, are a major reason for the higher VSD forecasts.
"China not only consumes half of all room air-conditioners shipped in the world, but is also home to their largest manufacturers; this suggests a future uptick in global shipments of inverterized air-conditioners," said Analyst Liz Cruz.
Cruz said efficiency regulations are a big driver of inverterized solutions, and she holds up Japan as an example: "The fact that nearly all washing machines and room air-conditioners sold in Japan are inverterized can largely be attributed to the strict efficiency requirements of the country’s Top Runner program."
