OSRAM Files Legal Action Against Samsung and LG Over LED Patents Jun 9, 2011

OSRAM filed legal actions that accuse Korean electronics companies Samsung and LG of infringing OSRAM patents on LEDs and seeks to block the sales or imports of the LEDs and products that use them.

Legal action was initiated by OSRAM in the United States and in Germany against both LG and Samsung, and in Japan and China against LG. OSRAM accuses both Samsung and LG of infringing its patents on white and surface mountable LEDs in the United States and Germany and accuses LG of such infringement in Japan and China.

OSRAM contends that its has patented electrical and thermal connection structure technologies as well as conversion technology , which is used to convert blue LED light into white light.

"Major competitors such as Philips/Lumileds, Cree, and Nichia have acknowledged our strong IP position by entering into cross-license agreements with OSRAM," said Aldo Kamper, CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors.

OSRAM is based in Munich and is part of Siemens' Industry Sector.
