Chinese appliance maker Hisense held an Eco Product Launch Event in South Africa as an answer to South Africa’s “49M” initiative intended to decrease energy consumption.

A March 18, 2011 speech by South Africa Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe introduced the initiative, which seeks to make saving energy the “national culture” in support of the country's economic development. The name "49M" refers to the role that each of the country’s 49 million citizens can have in generating "negawatts" or saved energy.

Hisense's product launch included LED/LCD TVs, A++ rated refrigerators, and inverter air-conditioners.
