Global stainless crude steel production in the first quarter of 2011 was 8.387 million metric tons (mmt) according to preliminary numbers from the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF).
These shipments represent an increase of 8.2% on already strong levels of production of 7.749 mmt in the fourth quarter of 2010. They are 8.6% higher than the 7.724 mmt reported for the first quarter of 2010.
Most regions reported increased production volumes in the quarter-on-quarter comparison. However, the Americas region shows the strongest growth.
Numbers released during the ISSF–15 Annual Conference of Members in Madrid show stainless and heat resisting crude steel production in the first quarter of 2011 was:
• Western Europe/Africa: 2,215,000 mt, up 19.2% from 4Q 2010 and up 6.4% from 1Q 2010
• Eastern Europe: 79,000 mt, down 9.7% from 4Q 2010 and up 8.4% from 1Q 2010
• The Americas: 779,000 mt, up 37.0% from 4Q 2010 and up 6.9% from 1Q 2010
• Asia (not including China): 2,293,000 mt, down 2.4% from 4Q 2010 and up 0.2% from 1Q 2010 (ISSF noted that a major upwards revision was made to Indian stainless crude steel production numbers from previous released data.)
• China: 2,943,000 mt, up 4.6% from 4Q 2010 and up 18.0% from 1Q 2010
ISSF does not expect that these growth to be sustained over the rest of 2011. It is expected that markets will return to de-stocking due to the current high volatility of raw material quotations. ISSF does, however, expect global stainless steel production growth for the year and expects 2011 to be another year of record production.
