More than 50,000 industry professionals registered for the 4-day Kitchen/Bath Industry Show and Conference (K/BIS) held April 10-13, 2003 in Orlando, FL, U.S. Walt Goldsby, K/BIS Show director and group vice president of VNU Expositions, producers of K/BIS said, "We are thrilled that our efforts to improve the most important event in the industry are showing strong results. The exhibit hall expanded significantly this year and we were pleased to see more than 785 exhibitors, sponsors and partners put on one of the best shows the industry has ever seen. We thank all those who attended the event and showed support for K/BIS. We are committed to continuing this pattern of success in the years to come." At the National Kitchen & Bath Association's (NKBA) Business Meeting and Luncheon on April 10, David Kohler, president of Kohler Co. Kitchen & Bath Group, spoke about the future of the kitchen and bath industry. In his keynote, Mr. Kohler noted Americans passion for kitchens and baths, saying: "When asked if they would rather take a luxury vacation or remodel their kitchen or bath, more consumers said they would prefer to remodel their kitchen or bath." He also said today's consumer is looking for a higher standard of living, quality products, larger homes, and bigger rooms. The rapidly growing Do-It-Yourself market is helping to educate consumers, but when it comes to kitchens and baths, there is a great need for professionals. Mr. Kohler also predicted that future growth will stem from increased consumer information and service, greater recognition of the lasting value of high-end products and brand awareness, and adapting to and meeting the needs of an aging, ethnically diverse, stressed consumer base with a desire for luxury, authenticity and integrity. On opening day of the expo, April 11, FOX TV's Bill O'Reilly's keynote drew a crowd of more than 1,500 K/BIS attendees. Host of The O'Reilly Factor, the two-time Emmy award winning host shared his political views on current events. Attendees walked away with Mr. O'Reilly's views on the economy, which provided deep insights on how consumers will be investing in their homes. At NKBA's Design Idea Center, a collaboration of Woman's Day Special's and well-respected home design teams created rooms that may become the trends this year and beyond. Woman's Day Special's featured innovative combinations of styles and color in a 900 sq-ft structure called "Color Power" in a project led by Mervyn Kaufman with John Troxell, design director of Wood-Mode, Inc., and John A. Buscarello, ASID. Under the direction of Ellen Frankel, a new addition to the Design Idea Center included a 1,800 sq-ft structure housing "The New Terrace," a kitchen that suggests outdoor living with protection from the elements; "The Mountain Retreat Gourmet Kitchen" a modest size, but dramatic kitchen that reflects the colors and rusticity of the Rockies and the Adirondacks without any of the clich├ęs; "A Playroom Plus," a colorful children's entertainment center with multiple activity areas including a computer station, a mini kitchen, a full bathroom, and a climbing wall; and "Bathed In Luxury," an ultra-chic bathroom centered around a tiled oval structure, which opens to a shower and toilet area. The New Product Pavilion featured a selective display, which highlighted the most recent industry breakthroughs. The products were judged by attendees to determine the New Product Awards for the year. The winner for Best New Kitchen Product was Rocky Mountain Hardware with the Apron Front Sink; and Best New Bath Product was Capizzi with the Calia Products. NKBA's 2003 Design Competition award winners were highlighted during the NKBA Board of Directors Gala where hundreds of leaders, members, and colleagues of the association mingled the night before they opened the show floor. K/BIS 2004 will be held in Chicago, IL U.S. on April 2-4, 2004.
