U.S. Trade Commission Finds Indication of Dumping of Refrigerators from Korea and Mexico May 19, 2011

In a May 13, 2011 vote the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) found a reasonable indication that the U.S. appliance industry is materially injured or threatened with material injury because of imports of bottom mount combination refrigerator-freezers from Korea that are allegedly subsidized and imports from Korea and Mexico that are allegedly sold in the United States at less than fair value.

As a result of the commission's affirmative determination, the U.S. Department of Commerce will continue to conduct its countervailing duty investigation on imports of these products from Korea and its antidumping duty investigations on imports of these products from Korea and Mexico. Its preliminary findings are due June 23, 2011 on subsidized Korean imported refrigerators. Preliminary antidumping duty determinations will come on Sept. 6, 2011.

In March of this year Whirlpool Corp. filed antidumping and countervailing duty petitions against bottom-mount refrigerators from South Korea and an antidumping petition against the same product from Mexico. Two Korean appliance producers, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, export their production to the United States from manufacturing facilities in both Korea and Mexico.
