New TV Energy Labels Requirements Kick In May 13, 2011

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) hailed the new Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requirements, effective for all TVs manufactured after May 10, 2011, for removable, detailed, yellow-and-black labels that disclose the TV's estimated annual energy cost.

“We applaud the implementation of this new program. Not only will it assist consumers interested in energy use in making purchasing decisions, but also it will further demonstrate the relatively low power consumption of today’s digital televisions,” said Douglas Johnson, CEA’s vice president of technology policy.

In February of 2011 CEA released a comprehensive study of TV energy efficiency gains and found that liquid crystal display (LCD) energy use declined 63% in active power mode from 2003 to 2010 while plasma TV active power mode use declined 41% from 2008 to 2010.
