North American Metals Shipments Steady

Shipments of steel and aluminum products from metals service centers in the United States and Canada showed continued steady growth from the previous year during March 2011, according to the Metals Activity Report from the Metals Service Center Institute.

March steel shipments from U.S. metals service centers totaled 3.82 million tons, up 19.0% from shipments in March 2010. Shipments for the first quarter of 2011, at 10.43 million tons, were 23.5% ahead of first quarter 2010. Steel product inventories at the end of March were nearly 8.02 million tons, 23.5% larger than a year ago and, at current shipping rates, equal to a 2.1-month supply.

Canadian service center steel shipments in March totaled 615,000 tons, up 19.1% over March 2010. First-quarter shipments of 1.66 million tons were up 18.1% from 1Q 2010. Canadian steel product inventories at the end of March, at 1.53 million tons, were 13.1% larger than at the same time in 2010 and, at current shipping rates, equal to a 2.5-month supply.

March shipments of aluminum products from U.S. metals service centers were 141,300 tons, up 30.9% from March 2010. First-quarter 2011 shipments were 376,000 tons, up 29% from 1Q 2010. Month-end inventories of aluminum were 356,000 tons, 30.1% more than at the same time last year. At current shipping rates, this was equal to a 2.5-month supply.

Shipments of aluminum from Canadian metal centers in March were 13,700 tons, up 9.1% from March 2010. First-quarter Canadian aluminum shipments were 36,700 tons, up 9.4% from 1Q 2010. Aluminum inventories at the end of March, at 29,400 tons, were 4.2% below amounts at the same time last year. At current shipping rates, this equaled a 2.1-month supply.
