Australia will have its own version of the global Design Lab competition, which appliance maker Electrolux conducts annually.

All Australian entries in the global Design Lab contest will automatically go into the running for the Australian Design Lab competition, judged by industry leaders in Australian design.

First prize in the Australian competition is a six-month design mentorship with Electrolux Australia plus AUD$2,500 cash. An additional seven Australian finalists will win an AUD$500 cash prize. Australian entrants will also be in the running to win a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design centre and 5,000 Euros.

"The local competition is a tangible example of our commitment to supporting and nurturing our young design talent," said Scott King, senior design manager at Electrolux Asia Pacific. "It will provide up-and-coming designers with a valuable opportunity to kick start their career and additional cash incentives will help them develop their concepts.”

The Australian judging panel of highly respected designers included representatives from the Design Institute of Australia and Powerhouse Museum.

• Oliver Kratzer, the National President of the Design Institute of Australia and Managing Director of design consultancy Ideal-Industrial.
• Mark Armstrong, industrial designer and founding principal of Blue Sky Creative, one of Australia’s leading design consultancies.
• Krister Gustafsson, Industrial Designer at the Powerhouse Museum.
• Pernilla Johansson, Director of Design, Electrolux Asia Pacific.
• Scott King, Senior Design Manager, Electrolux Asia Pacific.

The deadline for entry in Design Lab 2011 is May 1, 2011.

The theme of this year's Design Lab is Intelligent Mobility, and Electrolux is asking design students to come up with home appliance concepts that have the capacity to shape how people prepare and store food, clean and do their dishes, both within and beyond the home. In particular, Electrolux said, it seeks design concepts offering personalization, with the ability to inspire users while using existing technology to offer support and guidance.

In keeping with the Electrolux heritage, concepts should reflect Scandinavian design values, including environmental sensitivity, intuitive ease of use, and aesthetic appeal.
